- Identify the required measure and units before calculating. Residual income uses profit less a capital charge; do not import cash-flow adjustments from investment appraisal.
- Keep fixed total costs separate from per-unit allocations. In joint-product decisions, test which costs actually change rather than rejecting a product because of allocated losses.
