ACCA PMPerformance Management

Use management accounting to decide what to do next. A variance, margin or KPI earns its place in an answer when it helps explain performance or choose an action.

The syllabus, connected

What PM asks you to do.

A · Information and analytics

Choose useful information and understand how systems and data analysis support decisions.

B · Costing approaches

Use activity-based, target, life-cycle and throughput ideas where they fit the problem.

C · Choose between alternatives

Work with relevant costs, scarce resources, pricing and uncertainty.

D · Budgets and variances

Plan resources, calculate deviations and explain their operational causes.

E · Measure and manage performance

Combine financial and non-financial indicators, divisional incentives and transfer prices.

F · Digital exam skills

Present workings and give clear, relevant analysis in the exam tools.

What the exam looks like

Three hours. Objective questions and cases carry 60 marks. Two 20-mark constructed responses test decision-making, budgeting/control or performance measurement. A numerical answer alone is rarely the complete response.

Decision under constraints

Compare relevant costs, capacity or product mix, then explain the recommended action.

Variance analysis

Calculate the variance and connect it to operational causes, quality and responsibility.

Performance assessment

Use the requested model and a balanced set of measures to explain performance in the case.

Syllabus updates and the 2027 transition

For 2026/27, transfer-pricing objectives and multinational issues are added explicitly. Analytics methods and environmental accounting techniques are specified more clearly. The course contains A3 analytics and E6 transfer-pricing material addressing these areas.

answers to this question require depth to the analysis
  • Cover several relevant dimensions of the specified performance model and connect measures to the case. Do not merely calculate. For mix and yield variances, a favourable mix does not imply a favourable yield: quality can alter the outcome.

a mix of calculations and discussion/analysis
  • Target costing starts from market constraints; a suggestion that damages product quality may not solve the business problem. Multi-product CVP also needs interpretation, not just the weighted contribution calculation.

Choose what comes next

Your results inform the knowledge map and personal practice priorities.

  • Explain performance beyond profit. Choose measures for the service or business in the scenario. Connect quality, flexibility, resource use and innovation to financial and competitive outcomes.
  • Explain interacting variances. A cheaper material mix can reduce yield or quality. Calculate the variances, then explain their joint operational effect rather than labelling each in isolation.
  • Close the cost gap without losing the customer. Start target costing from a market-supported price and required margin. Evaluate design and process changes against the functionality and quality customers value.
